The ties were billed as the 'Battle of Britain' and the atmosphere at both Celtic Park and Anfield was highly charged and the encounters were thrilling. The 1st leg finished 2-2 after a breathless 90 minutes of pulsating action. Owen put the visitors ahead, then McNamara and Donnelly put The Hoops in front in the second half before McManaman scored a legendary world class goal running almost the full length of the pitch. The 2nd leg did not pack the same punch in terms of action, finishing 0-0 with Celtic unlucky to lose out on away goals after having the better chances on the night. McKinlay was on the bench for the 1st leg but was injured for 2nd leg. The full back spent 5 years with the club between 1994-99 and went to both Euro '96 and the 1998 World Cup with Scotland
